Whose Scent Are We Wearing?
God took me into Ephesians the other morning, and I wondered why? What would I find there that I hadn’t seen before? Recently a friend of mine who is memorizing the book of James reminded me how rich, and full, and alive the Word of God is!! After all the times she has been through James in her memorization process, God is still showing her new things! We will never reach the depths of all that God has for us to learn in His Word! So into Ephesians I went, to chapter five, verse two, where it talks about Jesus giving himself as a sacrifice to take away our sins, and that sacrifice was like sweet perfume to His Father in Heaven. (NLT) And then I knew why I was in Ephesians. I hadn’t been smelling like sweet perfume. The “world” had dumped some of its garbage on me, and I had been choosing to wear it for a while. Then I realized I could also choose to dump it out with the rest of the world’s stench! When Christ lives in us, we don’t have to wear anything but His love and forgiveness in our lives.
I talked to a friend who knows someone going through a very difficult and ugly divorce. The “stench” from what is happening is weighing heavy on her. She is pulling away from her home church, and from activities that she used to enjoy. Why? I think because her soon-to-be ex-husband’s garbage has piled up on her, and she thinks she has to wear it for at least a certain length of time. But it’s not her garbage! The things he is choosing to do, she doesn’t have to wear! When I think of this woman, who I have met a few times, she has always worn the sweet aroma of Christ. I told my friend, “Please tell her not to wear his garbage! It’s only the enemy who wants her clothed in that!” In 2 Corinthians 2:15 it says, “For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ…”
This reminds me of the Charlie Brown character, Pigpen. Everywhere he goes, a cloud of dirt follows him. As believers in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, that should not be us!! We should sparkle!! As we sang in church this morning, “Sin had left a crimson stain…He washed me white as snow.” God’s mercies are new every morning!
God’s amazing Word is our instruction manual through life. We are told to live in the Truth, so that “…Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” (2 Corinthians 2:11) Satan stinks up the world! We are aware of that! But that doesn’t give him the power to stink up the Church, which is the Body of Christ! Let’s boot Satan’s garbage to the curb and say "adiós,” which means "to God" in Spanish. God will handle it for us!
When Searching And Noticing the Divine, let’s take notice of whose scent we are wearing each day. Is it the pleasing aroma of Christ underneath the strong Armor of God, or are we unwittingly wearing the world’s garbage that has been thrown in our vicinity? Every day can be garbage day! All we have to do to put the “cans” out is to open our hearts up to the Truth of God’s Word, and let it wash us white as snow!!
