Prove To Me That You Love Me
Prove to me that you love me…don’t we often ask that of God? And many times we don’t want to listen for His answer—we think we already know because we are experiencing days when we don’t feel very loved. The world can be so hard and cruel. We wonder where God is a lot of the time. How does a God, that we can’t see, prove that He loves us? I believe the answer is found in 1 Corinthians 13. Let’s take a look…
As I read recently, sometimes our “demon-strations”/tantrums are the exact opposite needed for finding out how much God and others love us. But what if our reactions to these demonstrations were the same as God’s when He describes how love is in 1 Corinthians 13…if patience and kindness were evident? We might just catch a glimpse of the way our Father loves us no matter what. Or as Paul writes to the Corinthians in 4:12, if we were to “…bless those who curse us, be patient with those who abuse us, and respond gently when evil things are said about us.” We might see the true nature and love of God in those instances. If God’s love is never haughty, or selfish, or rude…if His love is not demanding of its own way, not irritable or touchy, and we responded to each other in that way, wouldn’t God’s love be better seen on this earth? And when others aren’t so nice, and we barely take notice, not holding a grudge…God’s love might be truly felt. Paul writes that love rejoices whenever truth wins out, as should we as believers in Jesus Christ. True love consists of loyalty no matter what the cost, always believing in someone, always expecting the best of them, and always standing our ground defending them. That is certainly a picture of God’s love, proven by what Jesus did for all of us!! No matter what it cost Jesus, He defended our eternal life through His death on the Cross! Who doesn’t want and need this type of devoted love in their life? We all do!! And that’s what the Father showed us and reminds us of when we ask Him, “Prove to me that you love me.” He gave us His only Son, to die for our sins as proof! When Jesus was on the Cross, He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” There is no greater love than that!
God knows what’s most important to us—to know His love. And only God truly knows what each individual needs, because our Father is the very definition of the word LOVE. He speaks everyone’s love language perfectly. If we will notice how closely Jesus’ walk on this earth matches up with 1 Corinthians 13, we will see how much He really does love us. It’s when we take a step of faith into God’s kind of love, as opposed to this world’s kind of love, that we will discover the true love God has waiting for us.
Searching And Noticing the Divine love of God is amazing! Little by little on that search, we will experience God’s love demonstrated towards us. When we begin living in what we are being offered, we will then be able to offer it to others who are on their own search for true love. We love because He first loved us! 1 John 4:19 (NIV)
