One of the Devil’s Lies

Having my quiet time in the morning is my favorite time of the day. It didn’t used to be. My Bible used to collect dust on the shelf, or be put away in a drawer somewhere. But that doesn’t work for me anymore. Life’s circumstances, past and present, don’t allow for a lazy relationship with God — it needs to be vital and alive and GROWING!! But one of the devil’s lies I’ve been hearing a lot lately is, “You really don’t need to be reading the Word again. You’ve read it hundreds of times.” I have been having tempting thoughts to skip my morning time with God, because the enemy is trying to convince me that there are no huge changes happening — and reading it will probably be a waste of time. But because my morning quiet time is a habit now, I’m able to push through those thoughts. I continue to get my coffee, peel my banana, and go sit with the Word. And do you know what happens? When I keep reading and praying, God always rewards that time with His reassuring wisdom! 2 Peter 1:12 said this morning, “I plan to keep on reminding you of these things – even though you already know them, and are standing firm in the truth.” That sounds like God speaking directly to the enemy’s lie! No wonder the devil doesn’t want us in God’s Word! He knows his dark lies will be brought into God’s revealing light!

In thinking about this struggle, it came to me…it’s like our child learning new things. In the beginning, everything is a huge accomplishment! And we get so excited for the growth and maturity we see!! It’s SO visible, and we share it with everyone! But as adults, we probably don’t see huge daily changes in ourselves. It’s a good thing, since growing older comes fast enough! As mature Christians, too, most times we probably won’t see huge daily changes in our spiritual growth. Because of that, we might think we can skip a daily time with our Father. It might not make that much of a difference after all… But we are being totally duped by a very clever enemy! It is a LIE! Strangely, although we might not notice the help we get daily from time in the Word, it is there. How can we know? Because when we don’t start our day focused on God’s ways, our “walk” will not be as intentional towards the things of God. We will be more self-focused than God-focused. We will have remnants of the fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. But we won’t have these working to full capacity! I don’t know about you, but I want all cylinders firing completely! I want gas in my tank, and the oil filled, because our enemy is ruthless! He will take us down any chance he can get! We must diffuse his lies with the TRUTH!

When Searching And Noticing the Divine, it helps to know what we are looking for in our day. We can start by not listening to the enemy, but listening to the Word of God. Once we set our bearings there, the rest of our day will come quite supernaturally!!

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
