One Pair of Shoes

Have you ever gone looking for just one pair of shoes? Of course, we all have! But have you ever gone looking in a place where you didn’t think there were any shoes, hoping to find some? That’s what we did recently, and we were once again astounded at how the Lord goes before us on our path!

When I found this verse in Proverbs 4:25, “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you,” it took me back to that moment in time…and to that one pair of shoes we needed! My daughter-in-law, Cami, and I had headed over to a CVS Pharmacy in search of a pair of shoes for Cooper, age three. We had arrived in Monterey with the whole family, all set to visit the aquarium, when it was discovered that Cooper’s shoes had been left at home. After some very rainy days, they were wet, and the plan was to dry them out in the car on the way there. But, they had been forgotten—and it wasn’t discovered until we had paid to park the car, and were getting out that there were no shoes for Cooper. We had remembered that we had seen a CVS Pharmacy within walking distance of the parking lot, so off we went, looking for just one pair of shoes to get Cooper through the day. As we approached the only place in the store that had shoes of any kind, we saw a very small, black pair of shoes sitting on the bottom of the rack. I remember my eyes fixing on them! Above the shoes were some hooks that held flip-flops and some water shoes, all too big for our little Cooper. Could it be that God had placed this one pair of very needed black shoes there in the perfect size for Cooper? He had!! They fit! So without much delay, we were able to make our way back over to the aquarium to rejoin the rest of the family for a day of fun!

What do we do with this simple moment in time, and this seemingly small provision? Do we skip over it and go on with our day? Or do we stop for just a moment, and thank God for once again watching over us in such detail? If we don’t remember to thank God for the seemingly small things in life, will we remember to thank Him when the bigger things come along? Where do we rule God out of the details, and where do we include Him in? Or is God in all things, at all times? Isaiah 65:24 says, “I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!” On the quick walk over to CVS, Cami and I were still talking about our needs…and God had gone ahead to answer them! That’s fun to see! Sometimes we see prayers answered with a, “Yes,” and sometimes a, “No,” or even a, “Wait.” But…

If we are truly Searching And Noticing the Divine each day, I believe we will see God’s provisions more and more no matter what His answer is! In all things God works together with those who love him to bring about what is good. (Romans 8:28) On this day, one small pair of shoes was very good!!
