Looking Back

Most times we are urged to look forward, to keep moving ahead, one step at a time. But many times we learn so much by taking just a moment to look back. Sometimes we can miss what God is doing in the heat of the moment! It can be easier to be Searching And Noticing the Divine with hindsight.

I recently spent a few days away with friends. Most times, it’s totally fun, and totally relaxing. This time away was a bit different. Some things in life had to be dealt with, and life can be hard stuff. Although this was not a planned getaway, five friends gathered very quickly to say, “I’m in!” That’s a miracle in itself in this crazy, busy world.

We made our way to the mountain top to join together about “valley” happenings. Conversations flowed, feelings were expressed, tears were shed, prayers were said, support was given, and what could have become chaos in this world became blessings in God’s world. What could have become division became unity. What could have become anger became relief. And only upon looking back, can we see what God so clearly did. He brought friends together to do what friends are meant to do, be there for each other.

We all entered into this time away with different needs. One was dealing with sadness after having to say good-bye to someone. One was needing rest after a job well done. One was filled with confusion and needing clarity. One was feeling alone and needing support. And one was willing to provide the place and the wisdom needed for God’s work to be done. It became so obvious on the mountain that God never intended for us to do this life alone. Jesus is the Head, we are the body, and we are to live joined together for good reason! My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:26)

When we come together with willing hearts in the life of faith, to love God and to love others right where they are at, God’s plan works! God’s hand is so mighty and so powerful that He can push away any darkness there is and reveal His great light! We came down from the mountain lighter and more ready to run in this race called life! Looking back, we can see God’s perfect orchestration of each event. Our faith has been strengthened after watching God meet each specific need in such a miraculous way.

When Searching And Noticing the Divine, sometimes we’ll be more aware of God after He has just passed by.

As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
Exodus 33:22 (NLT)
