Are we being guarded against the strategies and tricks of the devil? We need to be! As our pastor said in a recent sermon, the enemy knows how to deliver Smart Bombs – bombs that know where to go, and just when to explode in our hearts and in our minds! We are in a battle every single day with a very clever foe! Without God’s Truth as our protection, we will be an easy target!!
We just got back from Oregon, visiting the kids and grandkids! Our eight year old granddaughter, Kylie, and I love to study the Bible together. This time we were reading Philippians 4:6-7. It talks about not worrying about anything, but praying about everything. Usually we worry about most things, and pray about some things. How do we get this so mixed up? It goes on to say, “Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” What happens then? Well, “If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand.” (Bold added) As I read that again this morning, I looked up at the picture on the wall across from where I sit here in the SAND Room…it’s a beautiful photo of a hammock in the tropics. It looks like total peace to me. But then I thought, “There’s no peace in that hammock if there’s no peace in our hearts and minds while we’re lying there.”
Philippians 4:7 says that, “peace will guard our hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Funny thing is, when Kylie and I were reading this and discussing it, she did what seemed a very childish thing to do…she not only placed her open Bible on her chest, she then later placed it on her head. But, it was a perfect illustration of what we were studying! I started to shoot pretend arrows at the Bible while it was on her chest - arrows of fear, and worry. I showed Kylie how they bounced right off the Bible and back out into the air. I told her that God’s Word was guarding her heart from the arrows the enemy tries to hurt us with. And later when she placed the Bible on her head, it seemed silly at first, but then I realized the opportunity that God was giving me to do the very same thing again. So I shot pretend arrows at Kylie’s head, with the arrows bouncing back off into the air, explaining to her that God was now guarding her mind from the attacks of the enemy! What a very simple, but very clear illustration of what God is doing when we are spending time in His Word.
When Searching And Noticing the Divine together, sometimes God can use childish things to teach us very grown-up lessons of His love and protection in our lives! The enemy’s Smart Bombs are nothing compared to God’s Holy Wisdom! Let’s use it daily!
